Parramatta Local Court

Parramatta Local Court is located at 12 George Street, Parramatta and is on the corner of George and Marsden Streets in Parramatta. The court’s operating hours are 8:30am to 4:30pm Monday to Friday. 

Criminal matters

The New South Wales Local Court deals with all summary criminal matters and some indictable criminal matters.

Summary offences are minor offences such as driving offences and trespass. These matters can only be finalised in the Local Court (or Children’s Court where the accused is under 18).

Indictable offences are more serious offences like larceny, murder and assault. Some indictable offences can be finalised in the Local Court. Others must be committed to the District Court or Supreme Court.

Civil matters

The New South Wales Local Court deals with civil matters where the amount in dispute is up to $100,000. There is also a small claims division, which deals with disputes of up to $20,000.

Domestic violence matters

Applications for apprehended violence orders (AVOs) are made in the Local Court. An application can be made by a person who fears personal violence from another person. It can also be made by the New South Wales Police on behalf of a person.

AVOs can be made by consent or after a contest hearing. An AVO can be made on a temporary basis until the court makes a final determination.

Children’s Court

The New South Wales Local Court sits as the Children’s Court when dealing with criminal matters where the accused is under 18. The Children’s Court also deals with care and protection matters, compulsory schooling orders, and apprehended violence orders.

Parramatta Local Court is 25km west of the Sydney CBD. Buses to the Parramatta Local Court leave every 15 minutes from the Parramatta Railway Station.
