Perth Magistrates Court
The Perth Magistrates Court is at 501 Hay Street Perth. It operates from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday. The court has been in operation since 1976.
Criminal matters
All summary criminal offences are dealt with in the Magistrates Court. These are minor criminal offences and traffic offences.
‘Either way’ offences can also be dealt with in the Magistrates Court.
Children’s Court
When the Magistrates Court is dealing with a criminal matter where the accused is under 18, it sits as the Children’s Court. The Children’s Court also deals with protection proceedings and restraining order applications.
Restraining orders
The Magistrates Court deals with applications for restraining orders. This includes family violence restraining orders, violence restraining orders and misconduct restraining orders.
A restraining order may be applied for by a person who fears violence from another person, or by the police on a person’s behalf.
Civil matters
The WA Magistrates Court deals with civil matters that involve:
- Claims for debt or damages of up to $75,000
- Claims for recovery of real property valued at up to $75,000
- Consumer claims over the sale, supply or hire of goods or services
- Minor claims for debt or damage of up to $10,000
- Residential tenancy matters involving up to $10,000
Getting to the Perth Magistrates Court
